How to Travel from Trincomalee to Colombo by Public Transportation: Train & Bus Options

After our short 4 Days in Trincomalee, it was finally time for us to head back to Colombo just in time for Vesak 2026.

To get there, we explored both the train and bus options since they are the most affordable ways to travel between Trincomalee and Colombo. Originally, we wanted to take the train, but finding reserved seats during the Vesak holiday turned out to be more difficult than expected.

In this post, I'll share what I learned about both transportation options, why we eventually chose the bus instead of the train, and our actual travel costs, travel time, and overall experience along the way.

Trincomalee to Colombo: Train vs Bus Options

Based on my research, the two main public transportation options from Trincomalee to Colombo are the train and public buses (both non-air-conditioned and air-conditioned).

Since I have an adventurous appetite and I love train journeys, of course the first option I wanted to take was the train. During our stay in Trincomalee, we headed to the train station on our second day to buy our tickets right away. I had already learned from previous trips that train tickets can sell out quickly during peak travel periods.

Unfortunately, even two days before our planned departure was not enough to secure a reserved seat. After spending roughly an hour (or perhaps even longer) at the train station asking questions and exploring our options, we eventually decided to travel by bus instead.

However, if you're planning to take the train, let me share some useful information to help you plan your journey accordingly.

Train Information from Trincomalee to Colombo (May 2026)

Train Route: Trincomalee Railway Station → Colombo Fort Railway Station
Train Number: No. 7084
Train Schedule: Two departures daily (7:30 AM and 7:30 PM)*
Travel Duration: Approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes
Ticket Cost: LKR 2,900.00 for First Class (Air-Conditioned Saloon) and LKR 1,800.00 for Second Class

*On the website, only the 7:30 PM departure is visible on the Sri Lanka Railways website. According to the staff at Trincomalee Railway Station, the 7:30 AM service was not a direct train to Colombo. Instead, passengers would travel to Gal Oya and transfer to another train (originally departing from Batticaloa) that continues to Colombo Fort.

If you plan to travel by train, I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways website, especially during holidays and peak travel periods. Train schedules, fares, and routes may change over time, so always verify the latest information before your trip.

Bus Information from Trincomalee to Colombo as of May 2026

Bus Route: Trincomalee Central Bus Station → Colombo Pettah (Bastian Mawatha)
Departure Time: 11:10 AM
Bus Type: Super Luxury (NG 2545 / NG 1321*)
Travel Duration: Approximately 6 hours and 20 minutes
Ticket Cost: LKR 2,550.00 per person

*I wasn't entirely sure what the NG numbers referred to, but they are mentioned as the bus identification numbers shown during the booking process on the website.

In the end, we had no choice but to take the bus from Trincomalee to Colombo.

Originally, I was prepared to simply buy our tickets at Trincomalee Central Bus Station since that's what we were advised to do. However, while researching online, I came across a recommendation from Facebook about Superline Travels, a bus operator offering long-distance routes between major cities in Sri Lanka.

Out of curiosity, I browsed their website and was pleasantly surprised to find that I could reserve seats online for an air-conditioned bus traveling from Trincomalee to Colombo.

Instead of taking our chances at the bus station, I decided to reserve our seats online and pay the required deposit in advance. Not only did this guarantee us a seat, but it also provided all the information we needed, including the departure time, estimated arrival time, drop-off location in Colombo, and the final ticket price.

Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we made. The booking process was straightforward, the bus departed and arrived on time despite the Vesak holiday, and the journey was comfortable and affordable.

Air-conditioned Bus Experience from Sigiriya to Trincomalee

On the day of our departure, it was easy to find the bus heading to Colombo. The designated bay was located right in the middle of Trincomalee Central Bus Station, with a signpost indicating the route. Our air-conditioned bus was already parked nearby, making it easy to identify.

Compared to the colorful local bus we took from Sigiriya to Trincomalee, this was a standard air-conditioned coach commonly used for long-distance travel. The seats were comfortable, there was enough space for our backpacks, and the overall ride felt much more relaxed. The bus also made a few stops along the way for toilet breaks and passenger pick-ups.

As we traveled across the country, I spent most of the journey sleeping, to be honest, due to my motion sickness. But at other times, I enjoyed looking out the window while we passed through several towns, small villages, temples, mosques, and Buddhist stupas decorated with colorful Vesak lanterns and flags. Since we were traveling during Vesak 2026, the festive atmosphere was visible almost everywhere.

One thing that particularly caught my attention was the number of roadside stations offering free ice cream, drinks, and light snacks to everyone. While these stations occasionally caused traffic congestion in smaller towns, especially on narrower roads, it was heartwarming to witness such generosity and community spirit during the celebration.

Personal Thoughts

Originally, I really wanted to take the train because I enjoy train journeys and was looking forward to experiencing Sri Lanka's railway network. Unfortunately, traveling during Vesak was something I did not anticipate when planning this trip. I also wasn't comfortable risking an 8-hour journey standing, especially since I was traveling with my boyfriend who is still relatively new to backpacking.

Looking back, taking the bus turned out to be a great alternative. The journey was comfortable, affordable, and straightforward, especially with the convenience of booking our seats online in advance.

When I visit Sri Lanka again in the future, I'd definitely try to book a train journey ahead of time, whether it's the Trincomalee to Colombo route or another destination entirely. However, for travelers who prioritize comfort, guaranteed seating, and a shorter travel time, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the air-conditioned bus option from Superline Travels.
