During our 4 Days in Trincomalee, we mostly spent our time relaxing on the beach and doing a bit of sightseeing. Fortunately, we also managed to squeeze in a half-day dolphin-watching and snorkeling tour without spending too much.
We didn't visit the famous Pigeon Island because of its steep entrance fee, but I was still fairly satisfied with the experience. In this post, I'll share what the tour was like, how much we paid, and how you can book a similar trip on a budget.

- Tour Duration: Half-Day
- Cost: LKR 32,000 for two people
- Difficulty of Activity: Easy, although swimming and snorkeling require comfort in the water

What's in Trincomalee & When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Located on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast, Trincomalee is known for its sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and opportunities to explore the Indian Ocean.

Beyond its beautiful beaches, there are several water-based activities available in Trincomalee. You can go snorkeling or scuba diving to explore marine life, or join a boat trip to look for dolphins and whales.
The best time to visit Trincomalee is generally May to September, when the east coast typically enjoys drier weather and calmer seas. This is also the main season for snorkeling and diving, while whale-watching trips operate seasonally, with blue whales commonly sighted off Trincomalee between March and July. Wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed though, and boat trips remain dependent on sea conditions.
How to arrange a Dolphin Watching & Snorkeling Tour in Trincomalee?
Unlike other beach destinations such as Boracay (in the Philippines), where you can easily find boatmen and tour sellers promoting island-hopping and other water activities directly along the beach, arranging a dolphin-watching and snorkeling tour in Trincomalee required a little more planning on our part.
During our visit, we didn't come across the same kind of beachside arrangements where you could simply approach a boatman and book an activity on the spot. Instead, we explored three different options:
1. Book Through Your Hotel
One option is to ask your hotel or accommodation to arrange the tour for you.
Our hotel (Pearl Diamond Resort) already had a shared tour package for dolphin watching and snorkeling, with a breakdown of its inclusions and exclusions.
Although we didn't book through them, it seemed like a convenient option. We were told that if we wanted to join, we simply had to confirm with the reception before 9 PM the night before the tour.

2. Contact Local Tour Operators Directly
Another option is to search for local tour operators through Google or Google Maps and contact them directly.
We searched through both Google and Google Maps and eventually found Trinco M&M Snorkeling Tours through the latter. We checked their customer reviews and contacted them to inquire about their available packages and prices.
3. Book Through GetYourGuide
Last but not least, you can explore online booking platforms such as GetYourGuide, Klook, or Viator. Having an idea of the pricing and package inclusions before arriving in Trincomalee will help you decide accordingly.
This was actually one of the first places we checked while planning our trip. Booking online can be convenient if you prefer having your tour arrangements confirmed in advance. Just remember to compare the itineraries, inclusions, and cancellation policies before making a reservation.
Which Option Did We Choose?
Before deciding where to book, we compared all three options: the hotel package, local tour operators, and GetYourGuide. We looked at customer reviews, prices, package inclusions, and departure arrangements before making our decision.
We eventually booked with a local tour operator. I'll share our experience in the next section, including how much we paid and what was included in our package.
Tour Experience Highlights & What To Expect:
The dolphin-watching and snorkeling adventure started early in the morning. Our hotel, Pearl Diamond Resort, was just a two-minute walk from the beach. So, we simply walked to the meeting point.
Dolphin Watching in Trincomalee
The first highlight of the tour was, of course, dolphin watching! We hopped on the boat and sailed for around 15โ20 minutes before finally spotting dolphins swimming in their natural habitat.
The tour operator told us that they were spinner dolphins, and they seemed to be putting on a little performance right in front of our eyes! Unfortunately, everything happened so quickly that we barely had time to take photos.
There were quite a lot of boats in the area, waiting and moving in different directions, including ours. Because of this, we couldn't really tell whether we were watching the same group of dolphins or several different groups. One group, if I remember correctly, had around 3โ4 dolphins. At one point, we also spotted a baby dolphin!

We also sailed in a different direction to look for a whale. Apparently, the boatmen had spotted one in that area a few days earlier. However, no matter how long we waited and looked, we weren't lucky enough to see one that day. We eventually returned to the area where we had spotted the dolphins and managed to see a few more before heading back to shore.

What I appreciated most about our tour was that our operator didn't chase the dolphins or try to get too close to them. They believed in observing the animals from a distance, which is something I also value when joining wildlife-watching activities.
After the dolphin-watching trip, we returned to shore and took a short break for breakfast. Meals weren't included in our package, so we grabbed something to eat at a nearby guesthouse.

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles
After breakfast, it was time for the snorkeling activity.
We started preparing by putting on our fins, masks, and snorkeling gear. Once everyone was ready, we got back on the boat and sailed for a couple of minutes to the snorkeling spot.

Since this was technically only my second snorkeling experience (my first one was in Boracay), I was still not very confident in the water. I was quite nervous when I first got into the water. So, it took me some time to adjust and get used to using the snorkeling gear again.
My boyfriend, who was pretty new to snorkeling, had an even harder time adjusting. The first location where we stopped was near some rocks rather than in completely open water. Although he was wearing a life jacket, he accidentally hit himself against the rocks and, at one point, struggled to get away from them.
I only realized what was happening after a while since we couldn't hear each other in the water. We were with around 6โ7 people on the tour, and I do understand that the boatmen weren't able to stay beside each participant throughout the activity. Thankfully, one of the boatmen still noticed that my boyfriend was having difficulty and came to help pull him away from the rocks.
After that incident, we moved towards a shallower and more open area near Trincomalee Beach, which I believe was around the Dutch Bay area. This spot was shallower and more open, and that's where we could see corals and turtles. I personally found this second location much more suitable for beginners.
Personally, the underwater scenery was a little different from what I had imagined. I noticed patches of dead coral in the area, and I couldn't help wondering whether our visits as tourists might be adding further pressure to the marine environment.

Despite the condition of some of the corals, we were lucky enough to spot two sea turtles swimming around the area. It wasn't the most impressive snorkeling experience I've had, but seeing the turtles was definitely a highlight, and I'm still glad we gave it a try.

Personal Thoughts on Our Dolphin Watching & Snorkeling Tour in Trincomalee:
Similar to our Elephant Safari in Hurulu Eco Park, I decided to keep my expectations low to avoid potential disappointment.
At the same time, Pigeon Island is the famous snorkeling destination in Trincomalee, and I figured there must be a good reason why it's so popular. Since we weren't visiting Pigeon Island, I tried not to expect too much from the snorkeling experience either.
Thankfully, the dolphin-watching part of the tour was already a highlight for us. We were genuinely happy to see dolphins swimming in their natural habitat. What made the experience even better was that our tour operator shared our approach to wildlife watching. We both believed that observing wild animals from a safe and respectful distance is the way to go.
The snorkeling experience, on the other hand, was just okay. We noticed areas of dead coral underwater, but I did get to see two turtles swimming nearby. Even so, I was satisfied with the overall experience. Neither of us is particularly confident in the water (it was my boyfriend's first time snorkeling, too!). More than anything, I just wanted us to try something new together and gradually build our confidence in the water.
Once we're a little more confident, maybe it's time for us to visit Pigeon Island!
