An essential aspect to ensure your Africa trip is both enjoyable and safe is securing the necessary travel vaccinations. While requirements and situations may vary from one African country to another, let me at least guide you through the process of obtaining travel vaccinations in Dubai, UAE. Because, surprisingly, resources about this process are difficult to find. So, shall we?

Keep the personal hook, but immediately tell readers what they'll learn: your yellow fever vaccination experience, how you arranged the clinic visit, and what to verify before travelling.

Travel Vaccinations and Health Precautions I Took for Uganda

Travel vaccinations vary from one country to another, whether you're travelling to Africa or beyond. Each destination presents different health considerations, so it's important to research properly and consult a healthcare professional about the vaccinations and other precautions that may be appropriate for your trip.

In my case, when I traveled to Uganda, I found that although it's part of the Meningitis Belt, a meningitis vaccine wasn't mandatory, so I did not take one. However, I took other travel vaccinations and precautions as part of my travel preparation. including:

Here's what my preparation included:

  • Yellow fever vaccination: I got vaccinated and obtained my vaccination certificate. When I applied for my Uganda e-visa, the application portal required me to upload the certificate.
  • Hepatitis A vaccination: I also received this vaccine as recommended by the healthcare professional I consulted.
  • Malaria prevention medication: I also took malaria tablets as an additional precaution. These are not a vaccine, and the appropriate medication depends on the destination and individual circumstances.

While researching and planning for the Uganda E-Visa Application back in 2024, the Yellow Fever Certificate was required to be submitted, so I made sure to take it first before everything else.

Update as of October 2026: Uganda's immigration authority announced on October 2, 2026, that a yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer mandatory for entry into the country. However, yellow fever vaccination remains recommended for travellers to Uganda for health protection. Always check the latest entry requirements and consult a healthcare professional before deciding which vaccinations or preventive medication you need.

How to Arrange Travel Vaccinations in Dubai

To be honest, I naively assumed that getting a Yellow Fever vaccine would be as simple as walking into a clinic and asking for one. I quickly learned that the process wasn't quite that straightforward!

I searched Google repeatedly using the keyword "Yellow Fever vaccine near me," but I couldn't find clear enough information about where to go and how to arrange the vaccination.

Back then, I contacted Emirates Health Services for assistance. For current travel vaccination services in Dubai, you can check the Dubai Health Travel Clinics page or contact Dubai Health at 800 60 to ask about the available services and booking procedure.

Based on my experience, here are a few things I'd recommend checking before arranging your travel vaccinations.

1. Find a Clinic Offering Travel Vaccinations

Start by locating the nearest clinic that can provide the travel vaccinations you need. Check the available services and vaccines from that specific clinic, related costs, consultation schedule, and then ask how to arrange an appointment.

2. Check Your Insurance Coverage

Travel vaccinations may involve additional expenses, so it's worth checking with your insurance provider before your appointment. Ask whether travel consultations, vaccinations, and any prescribed preventive medication are covered under your policy.

In my case, I was initially told that I would have to pay for my travel vaccinations myself. However, after checking with my insurance provider, I was relieved to discover that my vaccinations were covered, although my malaria tablets were not.

My tip: Don't assume that all travel vaccinations are excluded from your insurance. Coverage varies by policy, so confirm the details directly with your provider.

3. Attend the Consultation and Confirm the Vaccinations You Need

Once you've attended your consultation with a health professional, confirm which vaccinations are available and whether you need an appointment to take them.

During my visit, I had an in-person consultation with a GP in Al Barsha Health Center who assessed my travel plan and destination and then discussed the vaccine recommendations with me.

My Experience at Al Barsha Health Center

Al Barsha Health Center was recommended to me by friends who had previously received their Yellow Fever vaccinations there. Since I already had a recommendation from people I knew, I decided to go with this clinic rather than explore other options.

If Al Barsha Health Center isn't conveniently located for you, you can contact Dubai Health or check with another clinic to find out whether it offers the travel vaccinations you need and how to arrange an appointment.

Located behind Al Barsha Pond Park, Al Barsha Health Center operates 24 hours a day. However, keep in mind that the availability of general practitioners and specific services, including travel vaccinations, may vary depending on the time and day.

The center also has a pharmacy, which was convenient for obtaining any prescribed medication. However, I recommend confirming the availability of specific medicines, including malaria prevention tablets, before your visit.

What Happened During My Travel Vaccination Appointment

During my visit, I went through the following steps:

  1. Registration: I provided my Emirates ID and insurance card at reception.
  2. GP consultation: I met with a general practitioner to discuss my travel plans and vaccination requirements.
  3. Vaccination: After the consultation, I proceeded to the designated station to receive my prescribed travel vaccinations.
  4. Certificate and prescription: I received my International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) for Yellow Fever, along with any necessary prescriptions, including my malaria tablets.

The process was fairly straightforward, and the healthcare professionals in Al Barsha Health Center were all very helpful in guiding me on the overall process.

How Much Did Travel Vaccinations Cost Me in Dubai?

I no longer have a complete record of the exact costs of my travel vaccinations in Dubai, but I remember that my insurance covered the vaccinations I received.

The only expense I recall paying for was the consultation, which I believe cost around AED 50 under my insurance coverage. I also had to pay separately for my malaria tablets, as these were not covered by my policy.

Here's a quick breakdown based on what I remember:

ExpenseMy experience
Consultation Fee Approximately AED 50 (based on my memory)
Yellow Fever vaccinationCovered by my insurance
Hepatitis A vaccinationCovered by my insurance
Malaria prevention tabletsNot covered by my insurance

Please treat these figures as a record of my personal experience, not as current prices at Al Barsha Health Center. Actual costs and insurance coverage will depend on your policy, the clinic and the services you require.

Final Thoughts

Getting my travel vaccinations in Dubai was a little more complicated than I initially expected, but once I found the right clinic and understood the process, everything went fairly smoothly.

Looking back, I'm glad I took the time to figure everything out and document my experience. If you're planning a similar trip, I hope my experience helps you understand what to expect when arranging travel vaccinations in Dubai. Remember that health recommendations and entry requirements can change, so check the latest guidance for your destination before you travel.
