I’ve been eager to revisit this topic ever since my trip, and after a long delay (a year, to be exact!), I’m finally sharing my guide on how to book train tickets in Uzbekistan with Uzbek Railways. Navigating the booking process can be confusing at times, so I wanted to provide a step-by-step walkthrough based on my own experience — to help fellow travelers avoid common mistakes and save time.
Whether you’re planning to move around Uzbekistan by train, need guidance on booking your tickets, or ran into an error during your booking, this guide has got you covered!

Uzbekistan Railways: What You Need to Know
Uzbekistan Railways (also called Uzbek Railways) is the only train operator in the country, meaning all trains and routes are run by them. Instead of focusing on the number of trains or routes, this guide is meant to show you what to expect before, during, and after booking your train tickets, based on my personal experience traveling around Uzbekistan.
Buying Train Tickets: Online or at the Train Station?
Today, online booking is generally the easiest way. However, not all services are available online, and sometimes the user experience can be tricky.
I initially decided to buy my tickets at the train station because I didn’t want to spend time navigating the website before my trip. Being flexible helped since I don’t fuss about seat types, so it worked well for me in the past.
I’ve actually used this approach on my trips from Tbilisi to Yerevan, Almaty to Astana, and Moscow to Saint Petersburg. But with only one failure: in Almaty, tickets were sold out for the entire month! Well, I'm not THAT flexible to wait for another month!
Understanding Uzbekistan's Train Demand
Train travel in Uzbekistan is popular, and tickets — especially on the high-speed Afrosiyob train — can sell out fast. During my September 2023 trip, I witnessed two cases:
- A South Korean traveler in Tashkent had to book a flight instead because she couldn’t find any train tickets online for her dates.
- Another South Korean missed her train and had to take a taxi to Samarkand for $200.
- Meanwhile, a Filipina traveler in Samarkand managed to buy a ticket to Tashkent a day before her journey directly at the station.
✅ Takeaway: ticket availability is unpredictable. Always book online in advance if you can, and avoid ticket scalpers.
Booking Train Tickets Online
Eventually, I ended up booking online — with a bit of help from the hostel receptionist, who let me use his bank card. Here’s the step-by-step process on the Uzbekistan Railways Official Website!
The overall booking process looks like this:
- Select your route, date, and train
- Register an account or log in via Google, Facebook, or Telegram
- Choose your carriage and seat
- Enter passenger information
- Confirm your order
- Complete payment

⚠️ Booking tips:
- The website can be slow on low bandwidth, so you may need to refresh or retry steps (I did mine multiple times!).
- Payment through a credit card from your home country may require an OTP sent to your phone. This can be tricky for travelers with foreign numbers, so having a local card or support from a local can save the day.
Train Ticket Costs:
Ticket prices vary based on factors like date, type of train, and class. During my trip in September 2023, here’s what I paid:
- Sharq Train (Tashkent → Samarkand): UZS 89,590 (~$7.20)
- Sleeper Train (Samarkand → Tashkent): UZS 142,750 (~$11)
Recap: Key Points on How to Book Train Tickets in Uzbekistan
Here’s a quick summary to help you navigate booking with Uzbek Railways:
- Tickets can be purchased at the station or online via the Uzbek Railways website.
- Demand is high, especially for the Afrosiyob high-speed train.
- A stable internet connection is needed for smooth online booking.
- Ticket costs depend on travel date, train type, and seat class.
I hope my personal experience, along with the screenshots as visual references, can help you save time and avoid confusion. This is exactly the kind of guidance I wished I had when I ran into errors during booking. By sharing it now, I’m happy to pay it forward and make train travel around Uzbekistan easier for fellow travelers.
Safe travels, and enjoy your journey through this beautiful country!

Hello! Found your blog. Filipina here trying to explore my way to Central Asia and I will be travelling soon (APRIL). I am doing a tashkent-Bukhara, Bukhara-Samarkand, Samarkand-Tashkent route and so I tried booking. I was wondering if you know about any issues regarding if there are 2 last names (EX: Dela Cruz became DelaCruz in the booking confirmation).. Will appreciate any response from you and I do hope to hear back soon.
Hello! Thank you for reaching out and I’m so excited for you! I haven’t been to Bukhara myself, but I’ve heard it’s a lovely place. I didn’t encounter this issue personally either, but from my experience in Central Asia, they tend to be quite flexible with things like this, including minor spelling differences. So I have a good feeling you won’t run into any problems. Hope everything goes smoothly for you!
